crime-of-fashion-mcclelland-102x150

In June our Book Club did something different. We each picked our own selection and I read Crime of Fashion by Jose’ Latour. I recently won this book in a contest at MysteryBooks.ca.

This is the first book by Jose’ Latour that I have read. In Crime of Fashion a rich woman who was a former model is kidnapped for Ten Million Dollars to be delivered in Euro Bonds. Latour gives a lot of detail about the characters in the story and it took till almost the end to find out who was the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

Other books by Jose’ Latour: Outcast, Havana World Series, Havana Best Friends, Comrades in Miami and more.

This evening at our book club meeting we exchanged books and we will read those in July. I will be reading Mudbound by Hillary Jordan.

May Book Club Selection - The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

m02000225 In May our book club read The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. This is the first book in the Ladies’ Detective series, which takes place in Gaborone, Botswana, Africa.

We all enjoyed reading this book. The different cases that Precious Ramotswe (the owner of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency) had were very interesting. You also learn about life in Botswana, Africa and about the people who live there. The author also writes about Precious Ramotswe’s father and her life before she opened her Detective Agency.

There are currently 10 books in this series:

In June our Book Club is doing something different. We are each going to read whatever book we like and then when we meet in July we will pass the book we read to another member of the book club.

I have chosen to read Crime of Fashion by Jose’ Latour. I recently won this book in a contest at MysteryBooks.ca.

January 2009 Book Club Selection

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

This evening we had our February book club meeting. We discussed our January selection which was Two Little Girls in Blue by Mary Higgins Clark .

If you have not read this book it is about the kidnapping of three-year-old twins from their home in Connecticut. They are being held for a 8 million dollars. The parents were not rich and did not have this kind of money, but the company that the husband worked for met and decided to pay the ransom for them. The ransom was paid and the children were suppose to be returned safely to the family, as per the Pied Piper, who was the person who had planned this kidnapping. But, unknown to him, one of the kidnappers had other plans and kept one of the twins, for herself. You have to wait until almost the very end to find out who the Pied Piper is and it was not the person I thought it was going to be.

During the story the author writes about how the twins were communicating with each other and how they felt each other’s pain. Do you believe that twins can communicate with each other? Do they feel each other’s pain? This is one of the themes in this book and I found it quite interesting that if one twin was ill the other twin was also ill.

Mary Higgins Clark is known as the Queen of Suspense and she has written many books. Be sure to visit her website where you will find a list of the books she has written and a brief biography.

For February we are reading three (3) classics: The Old Man and The Sea by Hemingway, Why Shoot the Teacher by Max Braithwaite and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.
